The BMW 1 series

BMW E87 1 Series



The all new BMW 1 series was introdued in 2004. A 5 door hatchback as a
replacement for the E46 3 series compact. Although first only available with
4 cylinder engines, some 6 cylinder models will be added in 2005. The BMW 3 series




The first 3 series was introduced in 1975. This model received the code name
E21 and was available with a four cylinder engine as 316, 318, 320 and 320i.
In 1977 the six cylinder 320 and 323i replaced the 320 and 320i four cylinder.
In 1979 the 3 series received a small face lift and in 1981 the 315 came available.
At the end of 1982 the new E30 3 series was introduced. It was available as four
cylinder 316 / 318i or as six cylinder 320i / 323i. In 1985 the 325i replaced the 323i
and the 324d diesel came available. Also available now were the four wheel drive
325ix and the 320i / 325i Convertible. At the end of 1987 the 3 series received a
small face lift and BMW introduced the 324td turbodiesel and the 3 series Touring.
In November 1990 the new E36 3 series came available. It had a M40 four cylinder
in the 316i / 318i or the new M50 6 cylinder in the 320i / 325i. In 1991 BMW added
the 325td turbodiesel and in 1992 the Coupe came available. A new Convertible was
introduced in 1993 and all four cylinder models received the new M43 engine. Also
new were the 316i Coupe and the 325tds turbodiesel Sedan. At the end of 1993
BMW introduced the 316i / 318ti Compact and in 1994 the new four cylinder 318tds
turbodiesel came available. The 328i replaced the 325i and the Convertible was now
also available as four cylinder 318i and six cylinder 320i. In 1995 the E36 Touring
replaced the E30 Touring and in 1996 a four cylinder 318is Sedan came available.
The 316i Touring and a 323ti Compact were added a year later. In 1998 BMW
introduced the new E46 3 series. It was available as four cylinder 318i / 320d and
as six cylinder 320i / 323i / 328i. The 320d was a four cylinder diesel wich replaced
the old E36 six cylinder diesels. In 1999 the Coupe and Touring came available and
BMW introduced the 316i Sedan and the six cylinder 330d diesel. The new E46
convertible and a new 330i and 330ix four wheel drive will be introduced this year. The BMW 5 series

The BMW 5 Series



The first 5 series was introduced in 1972. This was the 4 door E12 5 series.
It was available as 520 and 520i four cylinder. In 1973 the 525 six cylinder was
introduced. This model had 145 HP. In 1974 the four cylinder 518 and the six
cylinder 530i were introduced. In 1975 the 528 came available. In 1976 the E12
received a small face lift. The 520 and 520i four cylinder were replaced by a
520i six cylinder and the 528 was replaced by a 528i. In 1981 a new 5 series
was available. This was the E28 5 series. It was a 4 door saloon and available
as 518, 520i, 525i and 528i. In 1983 BMW introduced their first diesel ever:
the 524td. It that same year BMW also introduced the 525e. In 1984 the 518i
replaced the 518. In 1986 the 524d without turbo came available and in 1988 the
new E34 5 series was introduced. It was available as 520i, 525i, 530i and 535i.
In that same year the 524 turbo diesel also came available. In 1989 the 518i
came available. It had a new M40 four cylinder engine with 113 HP. In 1990 the
520i and 525i six cylinder received a new 24 valve six cylinder engine and the
530i went out of production. In 1991 the 525tds replaced the 524td. In 1992 the
525ix 4 wheel drive was introduced and a new touring was available. In 1993 the
518i received the new M43 four cylinder engine and the 530i and 540i eight
cylinder came available. In 1995 a new 5 series was introduced. This was the E39.
It was available as 523i, 528i, 525td and 525tds. In 1996 a 520i, 535i and
540i were introduced. In that same year the new touring also came available.
In 1998 the new 530d six cylinder diesel was introduced and in 2000 the 525d
six cylinder diesel and a 520d four cylinder diesel came available. The 528i was
replaced with a 530i wich has 231 HP. A small facelift was made in 2000: new
engines came available and some minor updates were made but nothing serious.
The E39 was replaced by the E60 in 2003, a complete new model based on the
E65 7 series.

The BMW 6 series

The BMW 6 Series



The E24 6 series was introduced in 1976. It was available as 2 door coupe. There
were two models available: the 630 CS and the 633 CSi. The 630 CS had a M30
6 cylinder engine with 185 HP. The 633 CSi also had a six cylinder but now with
200 HP. In 1978 BMW introduced the 635 CSi. This model also had a six cylinder
but now with 218 HP and a top speed of 230 km/h. The 635 CSi had sport seats,
alloy wheels, a front and a rear spoiler. In 1979 the 630 CS was replaced with
a 628 CSi. It had a six cylinder engine with 184 HP. In 1982 the 6 series received
a facelift. They now had a new dashboard and a service indicator. The 633 CSi
went out of production. In 1986 the 628 CSi was no longer available. The 635 CSi
now was available with or without catalist. The catalist version had 185 HP. In
1987 the catalist version received more power. It now had 211 HP. In 1989 the
new 8 series was introduced so the 6 series went out of production in 1990.
No new 6 series was introduced until 2003, when the 645Ci came available ....
A coupe based on the E65 7 series, but nicer and faster. The V8 engine means
333 HP, more than enough to reach a limited 250 km/h! A convertible will come
available in 2004, as will other engines for the coupe. The BMW 7 series

The BMW 7 Series



The first 7 series was introduced in 1977. This was the E23 7 series.
It was available as 728, 730 and 733i. All models had M30 six cylinders.
In 1979 the 728 received fuel injection, the 732i replaced the 730 and the
735i replaced the 733i. In 1983 the 745i came available and the 7 series
received a small facelift. In 1986 a new 7 series series was introduced.
This was the E32 and was available in 730i and 735i. In 1987 the 750i and
750iL were introduced. The iL was an extra long 7 series. This long model
was also available as 735iL. In 1992 the 740i replaced the 735i and 735iL.
This 740i had a new eight cylinder with 286 HP. In 1994 a new E38 7 series
was introduced. There were four models available: the 730i, 740i and 750i.
The 750i was also available as the extra 750iL. In 1996 the 728i and 728iL
six cylinders came available. The 735i and the 735iL replaced the 730i and
the 740i received a new engine. In 1997 the 725tds came available. In 1998
the 730d diesel was introduced and in 1999 the 740d diesel came available.
In 2001, BMW introduced a new 7 series which will be available soon.
The new 7 series will come available as 735i or as 745i 8 cylinders but
smaller 6 cylinders and diesels will also follow. The BMW 8 series

BMW E31 8 Series



The E31 8 series was introduced in 1989. It was available as 2 door coupe.
There was one model available: the 850i wich had a twelve cylinder engine
with 300 HP and a top speed of 250 km/h. In 1993 the 850Ci replaced the 850i.
There were also two new models available: the 840Ci and the 850CSi. The
840Ci had an eight cylinder engine with 286 HP. The 850 CSi had a twelve
cylinder that had 380 HP. The 850CSi had a special M package wich included
M style wheels and mirrors. In 1994 the 850Ci received more power. It now
had 326 HP. In 1996 the 840 Ci received a new engine but there were no
changes in power or top speed. The 850CSi went out of production in 1997.
All other 8 Series were available until 1999. There is no new 8 Series available. The BMW M series

The BMW M Series



The first M series was introduced in 1979. This was the M1. It had a six cylinder
engine with 277 HP. In that same year the M535i was introduced. This four door
model had 218 HP. In 1981 the M1 and M535i went out of production. In 1983 the
M6 was introduced. It had a six cylinder engine with 286 HP. In 1984 a new M535i
was introduced. In 1985 the M5 came available and in 1986 the M3 was introduced.
In 1988 the M3 convertible came available and the M5 went out of production. In
1989 the M3 received a new engine and the E34 M5 was introduced. The M6 went
out of production. In 1992 the new M3 coupe was introduced. The M5 received a
new engine. In 1994 the M3 sedan and M3 convertible came available. In 1995 the
M5 went out of production. In 1996 the M3 received a new engine. In 1997 the M3
sedan went out of production and in 1998 the M coupe and the M roadster were
introduced. This was also the same year that the E39 M5 was introduced. In 1999
the last E36 M3 was build. In 2000 the new E46 M3 will be introduced. The BMW X series

The BMW X series



The E53 X5 was the first X series available. It was introduced in 1999 and available
with a 4.4 litre V8, producing 286 HP. That same year, a 3 litre 6 cylinder with 231
horses was added. The X5 proved to be a huge succes, so in 2001 BMW added a
3 litre diesel and a 4.6is with 350 HP came available in 2002. Although not needed,
BMW thought it was time for a facelift, which came available at the end of 2003,
along with a new 4.4 litre V8, an updated 3 litre diesel and a whole new 4.8is.
At this time, BMW also introduced a smaller X5, the X3. Available with the 6 cylinder
2.5, 3.0 petrol and 3.0 diesel engine, the new X3 is smaller and cheaper than the X5.
Some say an X7 will also come available, but only time will tell ... The BMW Z series

The BMW Z Series



The first Z series was the E30 Z1.It was introduced in 1987 and had the engine
from the E30 325i. The Z1 went out of production in 1992. The next Z series was
the Z3 wich was introduced in 1995. First it was only available as 1.8 but in 1996
the 1.9 came available. In 1997 the 2.8 was introduced. It had a six cylinder
engine with 193 HP. In 1998 a new Z3 coupewas introduced. This model is only
available with the 2.8 six cylinder. In 1999 the Z series received a facelift and
the 2.0 six cylinder replaced the 1.9 four cylinder. This was the same year that
the Z8 was introduced. This new model has an eight cylinder engine with 400 HP.
In 2002 came the big surprise: The all new Z4 .... The BMW Classics

BMW Dixi



The first car BMW produced was the Dixi. BMW did not design this model but bought
the Dixi factory and the Dixi name. It was available as 2 seater and as roadster.
A standard Dixi had 15 HP and a top speed of 85 km/h. The dixi sport had a
top speed of 105 km/h. It went out of production in 1932.

BMW 3/20



The BMW 3/20 was introduced in March 1932 to replace the Dixi. It had an 782cc
four cylinder engine with 20 HP and was available as limousine, tourer, convertible
and roadster. There were 7215 chassis build before production ended in 1934.

BMW 303



The BMW 303 came available in 1933. This was the first BMW who had a six cylinder
engine and the 'kidney' grille. The 303 had 30 HP and a top speed of 100 km/h.


BMW 309



The BMW 309 came available in 1933 and had a four cylinder engine.


BMW 315



The BMW 315 came available in 1934. It was available as sedan and convertible.
The sedan had a six cylinder engine with 34 HP and a top speed of 110 km/h.
The convertible was named 315/1 and also had a six cylinder but now with 40 HP.
It had a top speed of 120 km/h. The 315 went out of production in 1937.
There were less than 10.000 sedans and 200 convertibles build.

BMW 319



The BMW 319 came available in 1935. It had a six cylinder engine with 45 HP.
It was available as sedan and convertible. The convertible was named 319/1.
The 319/1 convertible also had a faster engine wich had 55 HP and a top speed
of 130 km/h. It went out of production at the end of 1936.


BMW 325



The BMW 325 was a four wheel drive that was produced for use in the World War.
BMW was ordered to make this car so production started in April 1937. It had a
six cylinder engine with 50 HP. There were about 3250 cars build until it went
out of production in 1940. There is only one car known alive these days.

BMW 326



The BMW 326 was introduced at the Berlin car show in 1936. It was
available as sedan and convertible. It had six cylinders and 50 HP.
The top speed was 115 km/h. The car went out of production in 1941.


BMW 327



The BMW 327 was introduced in 1937 and had a six cylinder engine with 55 HP.
There was a coupe and convertible available. It went out of production in 1941.

BMW 328



The BMW 328 was introduced in 1936 and came available in February 1937.
It had a six cylinder engine with 80 HP and a top speed of 166 km/h.
The car had a Hurth or a ZF four speed gearbox and three Solex carburettors.
There were only 462 of these high performance cars build.

BMW 335



The BMW 335 was introduced in 1939 and had a six cylinder engine with 90 HP.
This was the last BMW before the second World War.

To find the origins of BMW as a company, we have to go to 1913. That was when Karl Friedrich Rapp, a distinguished engineer who had been director of an early German aircraft company, set up business to manufacture aero engines. He established his company, the Rapp Motoren Werke, in the Milbertshofen suburb of Munich, capital city of Bavaria. His choice was made primarily because one of his major customers - the Gustav Otto aircraft company - was situated nearby.

Rapp's ero engines were a success, but he continued to look for more work to keep his company busy. In 1916, he secured a contract to build a large number of V12 aero engines on behalf of Austro-Daimler, which was finding that it could not build enough to meet escalating demand. Rapp sought a backer to finance his company's expansion and in March 1916 the Rapp Motoren Werke was renamed the Bayerische Motoren Werke. BMW - The Bavarian Engine Company - had been formed.

Unfortunately, Rapp had made the mistake of expanding too quickly. Within a year, there were problems. Rapp left the company and in his place came industrial tycoon Franz Josef Popp. It was Popp who laid the foundations of the BMW we know today.

Abbreviation Translation Meaning
A/C Air Conditioning Not much call for this where I live :-(
ABS Anti-lock Braking System When the ABS computer sees a wheel lock it releases the brakes for that individual wheel for a short time. This allows the wheel to keep spinning and as static friction is higher than sliding friction stopping distance should improve on most surfaces (except for powder snow and gravel).

As the wheel isn't locked it is still possible for the driver to steer out of trouble, this is ABS's biggest benefit.

ACC Active Cruise Control Uses radar to maintain safe distance from car in front, on the new Seven.
AFM Air Flow Meter Uses a vane linked to a carbon track variable resistor and a spring to measure airflow in the intake. Now replaced by the less restrictive HFM.
ASC+T Automatic Stability Control + Traction If the wheels start to slip the computer reduces the engine power.
ATF Automatic Transmission Fluid Almost all BMWs use Dexron II / III ATF, even some manual gearbox cars. BMW power steering is also filled with ATF as a rule.
CBC Corner Braking Control Adjusts the brake pressure on the rear wheels while cornering to increase stability.
DDE Digital Diesel Electronics DME for diesels.
DIS Diagnostic Information System Plugs into the engines DME for fault diagnosis.
DISA dual resonance intake system Uses a flap in the intake manifold to vary the length of the intake runners and tune performance at different engine speeds.
DIVA It's German Fully Variable length Intake Manifold as found in the new seven series.
DME Digital Motor Electronics The computer that controls the engine management. This decides when to fire the fuel injectors and ignite the spark plugs amongst other things. It is most commonly a Bosch Motronic system.
DSC Dynamic Stability Control Adjusts brake pressure and engine power if the car could skid while cornering.
EDC Electronic Damper Control Dampers are comupter controlled for comfort or sporty handling as needed.
ETK Electronic Teile Catalogue Parts database, see my review of the classic parts CDROM.
EWS Electronic Watchdog System Holds a changing code combination in the ignition key which talks to the immobiliser.
FIRST Fully Integrated Road Safety Technology. Smells like one the marketing guys thought up over lunch.
FFSR Factory Fitted SunRoof Not fitted as standard to most models.
FPR Fuel Pressure Regulator. Uses intake manifold vacuum to operate a pressure valve to control the fuel pressure in the fuel rail. BMWs run a fuel pressure around 3.0 bar / 44psi.
HFM Hot Film Meter Uses a temperature vs current technique to measure airflow in the intake. Less restrictive than the older AFM.
HWW Headlight Wash Wipe A handy little toy.
ICV Idle Control Valve Used to stabilise the idle by allowing extra air past the throttle body.
ISIS Intelligent Safety & Information System System for intelligent deployment of airbags, only the required airbags are deployed.
ITS Inflatable Tubular Structure Sausage shaped head protection airbag.
LSD Limited Slip Differential Forces one wheel to turn within a certain speed of the other, useful to preserve traction on poor or slippery surfaces.

This coupling is expressed as a percentage and is 25-40% on most road going BMWs. LSD is being replaced by ASC+T on many modern BMWs.

LTW LighT Weight Generally refers to the lightened version of the E36 M3.
MID Multi-Information Display LED disply showing warning messages and other data.
OBC OnBoard Computer Provides time, date, fuel consumption, speed warning limit, range left, outside temperature, immobiliser code, etc.
OBD I/II OnBoard Diagnostics Checks the cars emmissions using oxygen sensors and a catalytic converter. Mandatory for new cars in many countries.

OBD-II really made it harder to make BMW performance chips as the system is adaptive.

PAS Power Assisted Steering All the better to help you park.
PDC Park Distance Control Radar sensors in the bumper give the driver an indication of the distance to an obstacle.
RHR Rear Head Restraints A legal requirement in Germany.
SE Special Equipment Common in the UK. An SE car has an option pack which could include alloy wheels, air conditioning, OBC and sunroof at a better price than if they were added individually to a basic car. An example would be a 525i SE. The SE badge never appears on the car which would still be badged a 525i.
SI Service Indicator board The thing with five green lights in the middle of the dashboard. Tells you when the car needs a service. Service intervals vary depending on how hard the car is driven and how many cold starts it endures.
SRS Secondary Restraint System Airbag. Primary restraint system is the seatbelt. Euro airbags are half the size of US models as almost all europeans weat seat belts, it's the law.
td / tds turbo diesel The s at the end indicates an intercooler is fitted to improve performance.
tii touring international injection As in 2002tii.
TIS Technical Information System CDROM used by BMW mechanics.
TPS Throttle Position Sensor Gives a signal to the DME when the throttle is closed or wide open.
TRX It's French Michelin designed TRX tyres and they were common on 80's performance cars. See my Tyres and Wheels page for details.
